Key Sustainability Challenges for Potato Processors and Advanced Solutions for Overcoming Them

In today’s world, sustainability is more important than ever, especially in the food processing industry. As the demand for eco-friendly solutions grows, potato processors are facing a range of sustainability challenges. From energy recovery to water conservation, the pressure to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact is mounting. Fortunately, Heat and Control, a leading manufacturer of potato processing equipment, is committed to helping processors address these challenges through innovative, high-performance solutions.

Energy Recovery in French Fry Production

One of the biggest sustainability hurdles in potato processing, particularly in French fry production, is energy consumption. Significant amounts of energy are required for blanching, drying, and frying potatoes, with much of the energy used in frying being wasted as heat.

At Heat and Control, we’ve developed a groundbreaking energy recovery system that tackles this issue head-on. By capturing and recycling waste heat from the fryer exhaust, we can significantly reduce energy usage in the blanching and drying processes. By adding a small amount of renewable energy to the fryer exhaust, processors can recover up to 40% of the heating energy required for their French fry lines. This not only reduces the overall energy demand but also cuts down greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.

Improving Energy Efficiency in Batch Frying

Another major challenge for potato processors is the energy efficiency of traditional batch fryers. While batch fryers are preferred for producing high-quality potato chips with distinct qualities, they tend to consume more fuel per kilogram of product than modern continuous frying systems. To bridge this gap, Heat and Control has developed three advanced systems that allow batch fryers to achieve near-continuous system energy efficiency, without compromising product quality.

  1. Booster Heater for Batch Fryers (BF-BH)
Our Booster Heater system recovers waste heat from fryer burner exhaust and uses it to boost the heat input to the fryer. This innovation can be applied to new builds or retrofitted to existing fryers. By reducing gas consumption by up to 30%, it helps processors save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  2. Thermal Oil Heater Batch Fryer (MTKF)
The MTKF batch fryer uses thermal oil heating, which is highly efficient for sites with multiple fryers. A single thermal oil heater can efficiently heat several fryers at once, improving energy efficiency across the production line.

  3. Universal Potato Chip Fryer (UPC)
The UPC is a revolutionary continuous frying system that replicates the premium product quality of batch frying, but with higher production capacity and improved energy efficiency. It offers an excellent solution for processors looking to scale up while maintaining product consistency.

Water Conservation in Potato Chip Production

Water conservation is another critical sustainability challenge, particularly in regions where water is scarce, like the Middle East. Potato chip production requires significant amounts of water for washing and preparing potatoes before frying. To address this, Heat and Control has developed cutting-edge solutions to reduce water consumption without compromising quality.

  • SWSM Water Clean-Up Module
The SWSM module removes up to 90% of the starch from potato slice washers, enabling processors to recycle water and reduce overall water consumption. This water can be reused for other processes, such as peeling and washing whole potatoes, without the need for expensive external water treatment systems.

  • PRSM Water Module
The PRSM module targets larger particles in peeler and washer systems, minimizing the need for external water turnover. This innovation significantly lowers the volume of water required for these processes, further improving sustainability outcomes.
