Sexy Fish, the latest outpost in Dubai, is already making waves. Opened on December 4, this vibrant, Japanese-inspired restaurant brings an immersive dining experience to the Emirates, staying true to the high standards set by its sister restaurants in Miami, Mayfair, and Manchester. Sexy Fish Dubai seamlessly blends sophisticated art, fine food, and entertainment, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.
What to Expect
From the moment you walk in, it’s clear that Sexy Fish is as much about the atmosphere as it is about the food. The interior design is eye-catching and extravagant, blending marine influences with high-end luxury. The reception area greets guests with soothing aqua blues, coral pink accents, and an eye-catching Damien Hirst octopus sculpture that seems to come to life. As you ascend to level 11, the lift is a visual treat with an iridescent mosaic oceanic floor.
Inside, the dining area features ethereal elements such as diaphanous floors, sensual siren sculptures, jellyfish-shaped table lamps, and Murano-tentacled pillars. Even the fish lights around the bar add to the enchanting marine theme, creating a truly immersive vibe. The music, carefully curated, further elevates the experience, making the whole atmosphere feel electrifying as the evening progresses.
For seating options, Sexy Fish offers both indoor and terrace seating. The wraparound terrace provides the perfect spot to enjoy Dubai’s cool weather and the breathtaking skyline. If you prefer a more intimate setting, the indoor banquettes near the bar are ideal for those who enjoy interacting with fellow guests. Meanwhile, the bar area is the place to be if you're in the mood for excitement and energy, with the DJ spinning sensational tracks all night long.
The Menu: A Culinary Journey
Sexy Fish’s menu features a variety of dishes designed for sharing, with generous portions that allow diners to sample several items without feeling overwhelmed. Each dish is carefully crafted, showcasing a fusion of Japanese flavors and contemporary flair.
To kick things off, we started with the Yellowtail Sashimi (Dh98), which was fresh and crisp with delightful citrus notes of green mandarin. The Crispy Truffled Tofu (Dh78) was another standout. It’s a vegetarian dish that surprises with its delicate, yet bold, flavors. The panko-coated tofu was perfectly seasoned, giving it a crisp exterior while maintaining a tender, lush interior.
From the signature maki selection, we chose the indulgent Foie Gras and Unagi Maki (Dh126). This dish will likely spark a debate—its richness is divisive, with some loving the luxurious combination, while others find the flavors clash. It’s definitely worth trying if you’re in the mood for something unique.
For fans of octopus, the Takoyaki Croquettes (Dh68) are a must-try. With deep umami flavor and dancing bonito flakes, these croquettes were a playful and delicious bite, complemented by a custom takoyaki sauce.
For mains, we opted for the Spicy Beef Tenderloin (Dh243) and Whole Baby Chicken (Dh154) from the robata grill. The beef was cooked perfectly to a medium-rare finish and was juicy and tender, while the chicken was packed with flavor, especially with its zesty yuzu pairing and playful hummus accompaniment.
No meal is complete without dessert, and Sexy Fish’s offerings did not disappoint. The Raspberry Doughnuts (Dh68) were light and sweet, served on a coral-like stand with a matcha creme patisserie filling. While I loved them, I couldn’t help but wish the hollow doughnuts were filled with raspberry as well. The Chocolate Fondant (Dh73) was the highlight, with mango curd cutting through the richness of the chocolate, creating a perfect balance.
The Standout Dish
While many dishes were exceptional, the Crispy Truffled Tofu is what stands out most in my memory. It’s a surprisingly unforgettable dish, transforming a simple ingredient into something extraordinary through skillful seasoning and expert technique. My dining partner agreed—it’s the best tofu they’ve ever had.
About the Chef
Leading the kitchen is Chef Bjoern Weissgerber, who brings a wealth of experience to Sexy Fish. With a background working at world-renowned restaurants like El Bulli and Mugaritz, and a Michelin star earned at the age of 27, Weissgerber is a culinary talent. His cooking style blends German, French, and contemporary Japanese influences, and he has been instrumental in shaping the menu and ethos of Sexy Fish.
