Abu Dhabi, with its rich cultural history and diverse culinary traditions, is a city of discovery – and there’s no better way to uncover its secrets than through its food. A unique initiative by the 421 Arts Campus invites residents and visitors alike to explore the capital city one bite at a time with a series of food walks designed to highlight the emirate’s hidden gems.
These food walks, known as the Abu Dhabi Food Trails, offer participants a chance to experience the vibrant and diverse food scene of the UAE’s capital while learning more about its history, culture, and culinary evolution. Whether you’re a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, these food trails promise to be an unforgettable journey through Abu Dhabi’s tastiest offerings.
Discover Abu Dhabi’s Rich Culinary Heritage
As Mays Albaik, Programmes Manager at 421 Arts Campus, explains, “Food is one of the best ways to explore a community or place — offering a direct connection to its cultural fabric and history.” With this philosophy in mind, the Abu Dhabi Food Trails provide a unique opportunity to connect with fellow food lovers while experiencing the diverse culinary landscape of the UAE. The tours explore everything from the oldest restaurants in the city to lesser-known hidden gems, all while diving deep into the traditions that make Abu Dhabi’s food scene so special.
A Flavorful Journey Through the Oldest Restaurants in Abu Dhabi
The inaugural session of the food trail kicked off with a visit to some of the oldest restaurants in Abu Dhabi, including a stop at Abul Afwal Cafeteria, a beloved spot known for its Sudanese foul and falafel. According to diners, the creamy and nutty foul was “perfect” for scooping up with freshly baked bread, providing an authentic taste of local favorites.
The highlight of the food trail, however, was a visit to Al Dhafra Restaurant, one of the oldest and most renowned seafood establishments in the city. Inaugurated by the late Sheikh Zayed, the father of the nation, Al Dhafra continues to serve exquisite Emirati dishes. Tour participants were treated to a specialty: the Emirati dish Jesheed, which features minced baby shark served with rice. Alongside this, the restaurant offered an assorted platter of grilled seafood, giving everyone a taste of Abu Dhabi’s maritime heritage.
Exploring Other Delights and Diverse Cuisines
The food trail didn’t stop there! Participants continued their journey to Calicut Paragon, where they savored Kerala porotta, beef, appam, and the tangy fish mango curry. The last stop of the day was at Olive Branch, a charming spot where participants were introduced to the delights of zaatar, Palestinian olive oil, olives, and jams—a perfect end to a culinary adventure.
A Community Experience Through Food
For participants like Hiba Basheer, the food trail wasn’t just about the food—it was about the connections formed with fellow food lovers. Hiba shared, “The tour brought together people from different walks of life. We started off as strangers on a silent bus, but by the end, we were a noisy lot that jammed over good food and fun conversations. I enjoyed meeting new people and bonding with them over food and culture.”
Hiba also shared how the tour helped her learn more about the city she grew up in, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s transformation from a small fishing community to the world-class city it is today. She added, “We learnt how baby sharks were caught in plenty by fishermen and how it became a staple in most homes.”
