Ecostore Announces ‘Holistic Cultural Shift’ to Enhance Workplace Safety

Ecostore, a well-known brand for its eco-friendly cleaning and personal care products, is making significant strides to improve workplace safety in response to a serious workplace injury that occurred nearly two years ago. The company has pledged to invest over NZ$323,000 (A$293,000) in what it calls a “holistic cultural shift” aimed at transforming its approach to health and safety within the workplace.

The Incident and Its Impact

In March 2023, a worker at Ecostore’s factory in Pakuranga, Auckland, suffered chemical burns to his eyes while manufacturing dishwasher powder. Following an investigation, New Zealand’s health and safety regulator, WorkSafe, found several issues related to safety protocols at the factory, including inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE), gaps in staff training for handling chemicals, and insufficient emergency management procedures.

As a result of these findings, Ecostore was required to make substantial changes to improve worker safety and prevent similar incidents in the future. The company’s new plans include a comprehensive, company-wide shift in its safety culture, aiming not only to address immediate concerns but also to foster a long-term commitment to health and safety.

Ecostore’s Commitment to Health and Safety

To address these safety issues, Ecostore has committed to several key initiatives. The company will implement advanced CCTV systems incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor potential hazards in real-time. This system will be designed to immediately alert staff to any unsafe conditions or behaviors, allowing for quick action and reducing the risk of accidents.

Additionally, Ecostore will introduce a new working platform specifically for liquids manufacturing, ensuring better safety and ergonomics for employees working with hazardous substances. The company will also be providing compensation to the injured worker and funding a pilot program that aims to educate and support businesses that employ visually impaired staff, promoting inclusivity in the workplace.

A Focus on Long-Term Safety Culture

The initiative represents Ecostore’s broader commitment to improving workplace safety beyond just compliance. The company’s approach focuses on creating a lasting change in its workplace culture by addressing systemic issues, promoting ongoing education, and continuously improving safety practices.

Mark Horgan, WorkSafe’s regulatory support manager, praised Ecostore’s efforts, stating, “Businesses must manage their risks, and chemical safety is non-negotiable. We are pleased to see Ecostore putting things right and being a change-maker in the manufacturing and distribution sector.”

WorkSafe will continue to monitor the company’s progress on the agreed commitments and will have the authority to resume prosecution if necessary, ensuring that the company follows through with its safety improvements.

Ecostore’s Growing Reputation

This commitment to improving workplace safety is part of a broader effort by Ecostore to enhance its operations and reputation. Last year, the company was awarded the Emerging Brand award in the ‘Mother and Baby’ category from China’s leading e-commerce platform, Tmall, further solidifying its position as a trusted and responsible brand on the global stage.

As Ecostore moves forward with its safety overhaul, the company hopes to lead by example, setting new standards for safety in the manufacturing and distribution sectors. With a focus on both immediate action and long-term cultural change, Ecostore aims to create a safer, more sustainable work environment for all its employees.
