- FMCG HORECA BUSINESS
After more than three decades in the grocery industry, Justin Vaudrey, alongside his wife Claire, has returned to his roots in Dunedin to take on a new and exciting chapter as the owner-operators of PAK’nSAVE Dunedin. For Justin, this is a full-circle moment, marking a return to the city where his career began, and a place that holds deep personal significance.
From Stacking Shelves to Store Ownership
Justin’s journey into the grocery business began back in 1989 when he started working part-time at New World Centre City in Dunedin, stacking shelves and gaining hands-on experience. Over the years, he progressed through various roles, including store manager and buyer, relishing the fast-paced, dynamic environment of supermarkets.
“I was working late-nights after just graduating when the owner offered me a job as a buyer,” says Justin. “I immediately loved engaging with suppliers, working with the team, and being in the heart of Dunedin.”
For Justin, the supermarket world has always felt like a natural fit, and after spending many years honing his craft, he moved forward in the industry with his wife Claire by his side.
Claire’s Journey: From Teacher to Retail Leader
Claire, originally from Dunedin, had her own path to follow before joining the grocery industry. After graduating from the University of Otago, she worked as a primary school teacher in the city. However, in 2010, Claire shifted gears and, alongside Justin, became the owner-operator of New World Westport.
“It was a big adventure, and one I was eager to commit to,” Claire says. “My background in teaching gave me a strong foundation in people skills, training, development, and building culture.”
Claire's passion for nurturing talent and helping her team grow has been one of her greatest rewards. “I love seeing my team fall in love with the industry like I have and offering them guidance and development to achieve their goals,” she adds.
A Wealth of Experience Across New Zealand
After their time in Westport, Justin and Claire moved to Christchurch, where they became owners of New World South City. Here, they were also involved in developing the flagship New World Durham Street store, a landmark project for the South Island. Each store they’ve operated has provided valuable lessons and unique experiences.
“Westport taught us the power of community and the unity that a small town can have,” Claire reflects. “Opening and running New World Durham Street was an incredible experience as we worked with our team to create a customer-focused store with a clear strategy.”
Returning to Dunedin: A Dream Opportunity
For the Vaudreys, the chance to return to Dunedin was an opportunity they couldn’t resist. When they learned that PAK’nSAVE Dunedin was looking for new owners, they knew it was the perfect fit for their next challenge.
“Returning to Dunedin feels like putting on a familiar and favourite jacket,” Justin says. “Seeing old family and friends again feels very natural, and we couldn’t wait to get stuck in.”
As the sole PAK’nSAVE in the city, Justin and Claire are committed to providing the best possible PAK’nSAVE experience to the Dunedin community. “Our goal is to work with the team and ensure the store represents the brand well and serves the community with excellence,” Justin adds.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking Forward
Since taking over the store just over a month ago, Justin and Claire have experienced a smooth transition, though not without its challenges. In October, flash floods caused damage to many homes and businesses in the area, highlighting the importance of staying calm during times of crisis.
“Although our store wasn’t directly affected, that day really showed us how essential it is to keep key items stocked during an emergency,” Justin says. “Our team members were amazing, coming in on their days off to stock shelves and help with the clean-up. Their dedication and can-do attitude were incredibly appreciated.”
A Bright Future Ahead for PAK’nSAVE Dunedin
Looking ahead, Claire is excited about the future of both PAK’nSAVE Dunedin and Dunedin itself. “Dunedin has such a great heartbeat,” she says. “It’s a city with strong community vibes, rich history, and the university adds so much culture. We’re here for the long haul, and we’re excited about the next chapter of our journey.”
For Justin and Claire, this new adventure feels like a true homecoming. With a shared commitment to community, customer service, and growing their team, the Vaudreys are ready to make PAK’nSAVE Dunedin a local favourite once again.
Stay tuned for more updates from PAK’nSAVE Dunedin as Justin, Claire, and their team continue to deliver a fantastic shopping experience to the heart of Dunedin.
