Next Monday, the Chicago-based fast food company will introduce plant-based McNuggets. Germany is the first market to get them.
The McPlant Nuggets are the second product McDonald's has co-developed with Beyond Meat, a manufacturer of plant-based meats situated in El Segundo, California. Since 2021, McDonald's has sold a McPlant burger.
McDonald's said the statewide nugget rollout to more than 1,400 German locations followed a limited-time test in August at nine restaurants in the Stuttgart region. Next week, McDonald's will also begin selling the McPlant burger in Germany.
McDonald's said that the availability of the McPlant nuggets and burger in future markets would rely on consumer demand.
In general, European consumers have been more receptive to McDonald's plant-based beef items than their American counterparts. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, Austria, and the Netherlands, the McPlant burger has become a permanent menu item. McDonald's introduced the Double McPlant burger in the United Kingdom and Ireland last month.
In the United States, however, McDonald's stopped a test of the McPlant burger without declaring any further intentions to sell it.
In 2021, Beyond Meat started selling plant-based chicken in U.S. supermarkets. It has also collaborated with KFC and Panda Express to make plant-based nuggets and tenders.
